District IV Participates in
Make A Difference Day– This citywide
day of service, held on Oct. 24, offered
a number of different volunteer projects
to enhance our community. Special
thanks to Ray Dettmann, President of the
Poinciana Park Civic Association, and
Steve Buckingham, President of the
Tarpon River Civic Association, for
sending these pictures of their projects.
Las Olas Boulevard Traffic Calming and Safety Project Update– On Oct. 26,
Commissioner Dean Trantalis and I convened a meeting, which was led by our
Transportation and Mobility Department staff, to provide an update on the latest design
concepts to help slow traffic and improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety in the East Las
Olas Boulevard area. To learn more about the update provided, staff’s presentation can
be found here: www.fortlauderdale.gov/home/showdocument?id=12463.
A summary of audience questions and answers is posted here: www.fortlauderdale.gov/
home/showdocument?id=12495. Thanks to all who participated.
Update on Vacation Rentals– Our new Ordinance C-15-29, regulating short-term
rentals, became effective Nov. 1. To register a vacation rental property, please go to
www.fortlauderdale.gov/departments/sustainable-development/code-compliance/
vacation-rental-registration-program.
World Class Volleyball in Fort Lauderdale– I hope you had a chance to watch some of
the thrilling action of the international volleyball tournament held from Sept. 29 to Oct.
4. The Swatch FIVB (Fédération Internationale de Volleyball) World Tour Finals took
place at Fort Lauderdale Beach Park and showcased our beautiful City to visitors from
all over the world. For highlights of the action, click on www.fivb.org/EN/Beach
Volleyball/Competitions/WorldTour/2015/Event/index.asp?TournCode=MSSF2015.
Curb Protectors– From time to time, I am asked whether “pyramid stones” in the
swale area are allowed under City Code. They are not. Since 1993, it has been City
policy that only white, concrete “buttons” or “rounded turtlebacks” be used, set a
minimum of 6 inches off the edge of the roadway pavement. Concrete pyramids or
button shapes, colors, or positioning other than those allowed may be removed in
accordance with Code Section 25-5.
My City Hall Office Hours are Mondays from 2 - 5:30 PM and Tuesdays from 9 AM - Noon (in non-Commission
weeks). To schedule a meeting, contact MJ Matthews at 954-828-5028 or mmatthews@fortlauderdale.gov.
In addition to hosting two Pre-Agenda Meetings per month at City Hall, I am available to attend your HOA
meetings to update your neighborhood on what is going on in the City and to answer any questions or address
any concerns you may have. Please contact MJ to schedule.
If you would like to be on our e-mail list for news, notices, and events, please let MJ know and she will add you.
