The Landings & Bay Colony
16
Dear Neighbors,
Community concerns regarding safety, noise, and age of the aircraft departing and
arriving from the Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (FXE) while flying over the
residential neighborhoods including Bay Colony, Landings, Lake Estates, Golf Estates,
Imperial Point, Coral Ridge Isles, Coral Ridge, and the city of Oakland Park were
discussed at a meeting on April 23rd.
This is a quality of life issue. Florida law provides for a quiet, peaceful enjoyment of a
homeowner's property. Highlights from the neighbors:
• More communities should be notified by Commissioner Robert's office of any meeting
attended by the FAA so that all can get an opportunity to express concerns.
• Next meeting should be an informational session by Air Traffic Controllers and FAA
Safety Team representatives to discuss inspection of the maintenance logs of the planes
at the airport and follow up of issues brought up at January and April meetings.
• Neighbors questioned FXE staff regarding follow up for offending pilots who fly too
low and take unnecessary risks over the residential neighborhoods.
• More community outreach from FXE is necessary for the propeller airplane pilots to
discuss noise abatement and safety issues.
• Encourage the pilots to reach optimum altitude of 1200 feet as soon as possible if
they are traveling eastbound.
• Coordinate with the FAA tower at Ft Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport to see if the planes can be directed
over the ocean until they climb to a higher altitude before turning back over the residential neighborhood.
• Neighbors are encouraged to call FXE Noise hotline at 954 828 6666 to report low flying, loud aircraft. Ask for a
call back to report to you what action was taken.
The FAA Part 150 study is requesting neighbor complaints. Go to www.fortlauderdale.gov/fxe.
FXE crashes in recent years:
On April 13th, 2015 a Piper PA-31 aircraft that was inbound to FXE crashed off
Northeast 62nd Street killing all four persons on board.
On March 15, 2013, a Piper Cheyenne, crashed shortly after takeoff from FXE,
coming down in a lot east of the runway, killing all three people on board.
In April 2009, a twin-engine plane took off from FXE and crashed into an home in
Oakland Park, killing the elderly pilot and narrowly missing the homeowner who had
left his home five minutes earlier.
In September 2007, a cargo plane clipped a government building and skidded to rest
just off I95 north of Commercial Boulevard. The pilot was injured and the fuselage was
stripped away from the cockpit.
All of us remember the June 2005 crash of the old, overloaded DC-3 cargo departing
from FXE which crashed on Northeast 56th Street narrowly missing houses on each
side of the road. Three people on board survived.
In June 2004, departing from FXE, a single-engine Piper Archer crashed into an auto
body shop within a mile from the runway. Two passengers on board were killed and
one survived.
