Moran Challenge over the finish line

A

ccording to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, someone in the U.S. has a coronary event

about every 25 seconds. Approximately every minute, one
person will die of heart disease, making it the leading cause
of death for both men and women across the nation. 

With those odds, you want world-class care close by and
Fort Lauderdale is fortunate to be home to the Jim Moran
Heart and Vascular Center and the Jim Moran Heart and
Vascular Research Institute at Holy Cross Hospital.

The Jim Moran Heart and Vascular Center holds the highest
three-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and
was the first in Broward County to perform TAVR surgeries
and the first in the state to perform a paravalvular leak
closure using a transapical approach, both of which
provide an option for patients who are not suitable
candidates for open heart surgery due to age or medical
conditions.

Technology introductions in Florida include the Prime ECG
Vest, which can provide additional data beyond a
traditional electrocardiogram and the iCT 256-slice
scanner, enabling physicians to detect heart disease at an
early stage. Most recently, Holy Cross was the first in
Broward to implant the Reveal LINQTM, which can
wirelessly monitor a patient’s heart for up to three years
and is one-third the size of an AAA battery.

Tomorrow’s advances will be fueled by research being
done today at the non-profit hospital. “We stand on the
threshold of new breakthroughs in cardiovascular medicine
and the Jim Moran Heart and Vascular Research Institute is
now and will continue to be involved in leading edge
clinical trials,” said Holy Cross President and CEO Patrick
A. Taylor, M.D., MBA. “In addition, we are integrating our
research with preeminent academic centers to further our
robust program.”
