President's Message continued
water service lines identified as posing a risk to the public
water supply.
What is the cost of backflow
prevention assemblies?
Installation costs vary depending on the assembly and
selected licensed plumbers' labor costs. The City also
requires a plumbing permit to test and install these devices.
The investment to install and maintain the assembly is
minimal compared to the potential public safety hazard
and liability of a backflow incident. It is a State
requirement in order to protect the potable water supply
for everyone.
Who can install and test a backflow
prevention assembly?
Backflow prevention assemblies may only be tested or
installed by a licensed plumber who is also a certified
backflow technician. Property owners shall notify the City
before altering or adding new devices to the plumbing
system to help reduce cross-connection:

ATTN: LRA members and neighbors
We are delighted to note that, as the result of neighborhood
associations like ours from around Fort Lauderdale
expressing our concerns and objections to the City over the
late June date scheduled for implementation and enforcement
of the City’s planned BackFlow ordinance, the City has
suspended the Backflow prevention program as
announced below.
The good news about the article in this issue is that it
DOES bring everyone up to speed on what had been
planned as a way of addressing this issue. We’ll continue
to keep you informed on these issues, as always!
Thank you!

City suspends backflow prevention program
for residential irrigation systems
Today the City of Fort Lauderdale is suspending the backflow prevention
program for residential irrigation systems until further notice.
The City is exploring the possibility of grandfathering some residential
irrigation systems as well as reviewing and resolving inconsistent
determinations from various state agencies.
This program suspension is for residential properties only and does not
impact the ongoing backflow prevention program for commercial properties.
