The Landings & Bay Colony

President's Message continued

is a public entrance just as the three public entrances in the
Landings that were proposed to the City Commission in
2001 to be gated as well. The public access gates would
deter crime but also calm traffic. At the August 2001
Commission Meeting, the city manager instead
recommended the speed tables that are in place today.

The resolution passed by the Landings Board raises
important points to consider:
• Cost of effective policing. How many hours and when?
• Arrest authority? The nearest booking facility is still a

40-minute drive.

• Permission by Landings residents allowing patrols to

cross private property.

• 911 capabilities for marine crimes. BSO 911 still cannot

enter a “marine” location for Fort Lauderdale police
officers to respond to.

• Will the off duty patrols include a FLP Marine Patrol Unit?
• Once funds are exhausted, will the LRA Inc. be liable for

unpaid bills?

The tax base, assessed value, of “The Landings” as
described in your Landings Roster map, is estimated at
$387 million using a typical home. The Broward County
Assessor’s office could not provide the specific total
assessed value of “The Landings” for this article, a higher
number which would include new construction. Are we
receiving value for our property tax dollars in police and
marine patrol?
