President's Message

Lake Estates Improvement Association, Inc.

Neighbors,

I

n August, my mother Sara Watermolen passed away peacefully just short of
reaching her 100th birthday. Many of you met her at our Annual Lake Estates Light
Up the Lakes Party and Meeting every December. I am grateful to have been given

the privilege to be her primary caregiver in her golden years. She gave our family
more than I could ever give back to her. My formative years were spent with family
Sunday dinners, Friday night football games, picnics at Goldhead State Park, and the
freedom to play from the light of day until sundown.  Mom and Dad raised five
children on a sailor's salary. She sacrificed much for her family. When she continued
to pinch a penny in her later years, I reminded her that this was her time to enjoy life
and extravagances she would never have allowed herself to indulge in while we were
growing up.

She taught us to have faith in God and took us to the neighborhood Baptist Vacation
Bible School, Luther League Youth group, Catholic catechism classes, and the Young
Life group at our high school. Although we went to a Jacksonville public school named
N.B. Forrest High School (after the founder of the Ku Klux Klan) complete with our
majorettes wearing Confederate flag uniforms, Mom taught us to respect all people
with dignity. She valued education because she had to leave school after ninth grade
to help support her family during the depression. Because of her influence, all of us put
our way through college and some earned advanced degrees. She led by example
with unconditional support and love. She will be missed.
