Vice Mayor’s Message

                                                Understanding and Preparing for

                                                Fort Lauderdale’s 2025 King Tides

                                                Dear Neighbors,

iving in a coastal city like Fort Lauderdale comes with unique benefits, from
beautiful waterways to vibrant marine life. However, our low elevation and
Lextensive canal system also make us particularly vulnerable to flooding, especially
during seasonal events such as king tides. Understanding what king tides are, when
John Herbst they occur, and how they may impact our neighborhoods can help us all stay informed
                    Vice Mayor and prepared.
                City of Fort Lauderdale
              jherbst@fortlauderdale.gov What Are King Tides?
King tides are the highest tides of the year, caused by the alignment of the sun and
moon that creates a stronger gravitational pull on the Earth’s oceans. While king tides
are natural and predictable, they are becoming more impactful as sea levels continue
to rise. In Fort Lauderdale, king tides combined with heavy rain, wind patterns, or
storm systems can lead to significant flooding in low-lying areas.

Rainfall and groundwater conditions also play a major role. When the water table
is already high due to recent storms, it takes less additional water for flooding to
occur. Similarly, wind strength and direction can push tides higher than predicted.
This means that even on days outside of the forecasted peak tides, our city can still
City of Fort Lauderdale experience unexpected flooding.

                                                2025 Predicted King Tide Dates
Each year, the City of Fort Lauderdale reviews tide forecasts provided by the National
Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). For 2025, NOAA predicts
at least 33 days when king tides are likely to affect our community.
The highest tides are expected on the following dates:
