Commissioner’s Message
Dear Neighbors,
s summer winds down, fall brings a season of exciting progress for Fort
Lauderdale. I’m pleased to share several updates that will positively impact
AHarbor Beach and surrounding neighborhoods.
Over the next decade, our community will see substantial stormwater infrastructure
improvements. Earlier this year, the City Commission received an update on the Fortify
Lauderdale program. The City Commission launched Fortify Lauderdale to modernize
stormwater systems, especially in areas most vulnerable to flooding. The initiative also
aims to educate residents on best practices to prepare for future rain events.

The Fortify Lauderdale team will soon return to the Commission. During that meeting,
District 4 Commissioner
bsorensen@fortlauderdale.gov we’ll finalize how projects are grouped and sequenced. My priority remains clear:
every neighborhood must be treated equitably and receive the improvements it needs.
Another exciting development is the progress on the Broward County Bypass Road
City of Fort Lauderdale project. Last month, Port Everglades shared that State Rd. 84/Spangler Blvd. is
1 E. Broward Blvd., Ste. 444 currently reduced to one lane in each direction due to construction of the new
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301
Security Checkpoint 2. When complete, the Bypass Road will ease travel between
east and west, helping to relieve congestion on the barrier island.

Lastly, I’m proud to share that the City is moving ahead with several waterway quality
Vicki Gargano initiatives. I’ve been working closely with our Chief Waterways Officer on expanding
Community Outreach Director seawalls, mangrove plantings, oyster rope installations, and similar solutions. I’ve also
vgargano@fortlauderdale.gov formed an informal Waterway Quality Working Group, which meets regularly to identify

and implement real-world improvements—like our most recent mangrove planting.
If you’re interested in joining the working group or have ideas to share, I’d love to
hear from you.
Thank you for staying informed and engaged!
Warm regards,
Ben Sorensen
