Dear Neighbors,
appy New Year! It was great to see so many of you at our "Light Up the
Lakes" Annual Meeting and Block Dinner Party this year! It gave us a chance
Hto welcome new neighbors and renew old friendships. We thanked our
Board of Directors for their dedication and leadership in all of the accomplishments
for 2018. The nominations committee presented the 2019 slate and and the
membership voted for the Board of Directors by acclamation.
Accomplishments in 2018
• Successfully included our Lake Estates Linear Park in the City Parks Bond Program
for improvements to our landscaping in the neighborhood. The Special Election
will be held on March 12th.
• Participated in the leadership effort and defeated the Wave cable streetcar project.
• Worked with Code Enforcement reporting violations to keep property values high.
• Represented Lake Estates Improvement Association Inc at numerous City of Fort
Lauderdale functions.
• Coordinated with the City to implement the new water main installation system
Linda W. Bird, President project. Finally we have clean water! The Lake Estates $4.6 million Water Mains Project
Lakes Estates
Improvement Association, Inc. tried our patience but we are grateful for the results. The City successfully installed 1.9
miles of new 8-inch water mains in our neighborhood. The new water main system
included new fire hydrants and larger, new water mains and valves. All dead-end loops
and metal pipes beyond design life were repaired or replaced. In addition, the existing
ductile iron water lines were replaced with new polyvinyl chloride water mains. The City
sodded and replaced landscaping in our swales, pressure cleaned our Lake Estates sign
and pavers brick at both entrance ways on NE 59th St. and NE 57th St. The streets
were milled and new asphalt replaced the old surface.
• The Board of Directors met with the Ferrari/Maserati Dealership and the City
Development Review Committee regarding proposed new construction plans with
landscaping and a wall as a barrier from the commercial district to our residential
community. Our final negotiations included:
- a sound barrier either with glass and louvers where there is open space
- make the rear of the building a solid paint color with no accent colors
- downward lighting to minimize light spillage
- noise operations of the dealership will be moved into the new building
- Plant Bambusa Textilis as a hedge directly in front of the wall,
- plant Montgomery Palms in front of the Bambusa tightly spaced
- plant Ligustrums in front of the Palms every 10 ft
- in addition, install a wall similar to the existing one the length of the opening,
remove miscellaneous plants, remove construction materials and add sod, and clean
and repair the excavation work that was completed.
• Further, for maintenance:
- Irrigation system must be fixed and maintained
- The trees and grass need to be fertilized properly and allowed to grow to
maximum height
What a year! All the best,
Linda Bird, President
Improvement Association of Lake Estates, Inc.
