Commissioner’s Message
Lockhart Project Moving Full Steam Ahead!
t’s official! At our meeting on July 9th, the City Commission unanimously approved
a comprehensive long-term agreement with Miami Beckham United that will allow
Ithe Beckham group to invest $60 million to transform the Lockhart Stadium site
into a soccer-centric community destination.
The partnership breathes new life into this landmark 64-acre property. It brings
professional soccer back to our community; provides our youth with opportunities for
expert coaching, training, and instruction; gives our city much-needed new parks
and recreation areas, athletic fields, and stadium access; and ushers in the return of
high school games and athletic events.
With preliminary work already underway, the agreement gives the Beckham group
the green light to move forward with the full scope of this game-changing project. It
puts construction on the fast track to ensure a new 18,000-seat professional soccer
stadium will be completed in time for the debut of Inter Miami CF, David Beckham’s
Major League Soccer (MLS) team that will begin play in March 2020.
Heather Moraitis In addition to the soccer stadium, the Beckham group will fund and construct team

and administrative offices, locker rooms, weight rooms, classrooms, dining facilities,
medical and rehabilitation facilities, practice fields, parking areas, and a turf field
with seating that will be available for high school football games and soccer events.
The Beckham group will also fund and construct numerous public improvements to
the property including a public park, a dog park, playgrounds, multi-purpose fields,
walking/jogging/fitness trails, and ancillary facilities all for use by our community.
I’m happy to share the recent project rendering (below) produced by the Beckham
group that illustrates the location of the stadium, practice fields, and community parks
