Commissioner’s Message
t has been an honor to represent the neighbors of District 1 on the Fort Lauderdale
City Commission for the last five years. Fort Lauderdale is more than my home; it’s
Iwhere I was born, work, play, and raised my family.
When I was sworn in, I was given the unique opportunity to be a policymaker in this city
and help your voices be heard. Both in my district and across our city, we have made
tremendous strides in making Fort Lauderdale the city that you never want to leave.
This would be a big accomplishment under normal circumstances, but Covid-19
impacted our community in ways none of us have ever experienced before. As both
your commissioner and a member of this community, I am so proud of how we came
together to protect each other. Together, with your support, we’ve made remarkable
progress, in spite of the challenges.
Heather Moraitis I have returned to the classroom, and I love teaching AP Government and Politics at
District 1 Commissioner Westminster Academy. As I end my time on the Commission, I want to thank you for
City of Fort Lauderdale
hmoraitis@fortlauderdale.gov helping me accomplish so much to make District 1 in Fort Lauderdale a better place
for all of us!
District 1 Parks
Lockhart Park: The City gave Inter Miami 40 acres to build an 18,000-seat stadium,
training facility and turf fields for their new soccer team. In exchange for this land,
Inter Miami built a high school football stadium, and they will build a 20-acre
community park.
Beach Community Rooftop Park: Thanks to the voter-approved $200 million parks
bond, District 1 can utilize $3.5 million for an elevated, raised structure park above
the Beach Community Center on 33rd Street. Worked with neighbors, business
City Hall, 8th Floor
100 N Andrews Ave owners, and the Galt Condominium Association to submit a plan, approved by the
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311 commission, for a raised (above current parking lot) next to the Beach Community
Center in the Galt.
George English Park Boat Ramp Renovation Project: Existing ramps were demolished
and new, wider, and longer ramps were installed with 400’ linear feet of ADA
accessible floating docks and regraded sidewalks.
George English Park: 12 new pickleball courts will be installed.
Floranada Park: Planned improvements include upgraded lighting, ADA compliant
sidewalks, improved restrooms, and more. The park will also replace the existing
sand volleyball court with a new playground.
