Vice-Mayor’s Message

From the desk of Vice Mayor Moraitis:

The City is About to Give Away 23 Acres of Potential Park Land.
If you care about preserving prime city land for park space, then you will want to pay
attention to what is coming before the commission. We are voting on an unsolicited
proposal in September to build a concert venue on city land on 3.5 acres in downtown
Fort Lauderdale. The $30 million piece of land could be an active park for all residents
and the park bond you voted on could pay for the park.
Remember our conversations about the comprehensive agreement with Inter Miami on
the 64 acres at Lockhart Park? On July 6, the commission directed Inter Miami to fulfill
their obligation to the project and start building the 20 acre community park, at their
expense, next to the soccer stadium. On August 18th, some commissioners suddenly
changed their position. Now they support giving our 20-acre park to Inter Miami to
expand their sports operations and build more parking.

This proposed park
was funded 100% by Inter Miami as part of the Public Private Partnership (P3) regulated
by state statute that says a P3 needs a public purpose. I also support issuing a Request
For Proposals to solicit the best partner for an Esports arena located on the second floor
of the community center that will have thriving youth Esports leagues for our kids. All of
this is about to vanish if the commission votes in September to give the rest of the land to
