Project Update
Rio Vista Civic Association
Native Orchid Project
Next Installation April 29th
ur first year was a success!
We have native orchids thriving
Oin the neighborhood!
In case you missed the background story,
our project is Inspired by the Fairchild
Botanic Garden Million Orchid Project.
Rio Vista Civic Association committed
to a three-year program to repopulate
our trees with native orchids that once
thrived all over South Florida. In addition
to beautifying our streets, the orchids
support and attract birds, butterflies and
bees. Unlike non-native orchids, the native
orchids will also self-populate.
Our first installation was July 16th, 2022,
and it was a huge success. We had over
25 volunteers who learned how to attach
orchids to the trees and proceeded to
attach 150 orchids that same morning.
We also had a group of volunteers form a
watering team which assured the orchids
a healthy start.
And July was just the beginning. We
installed an additional 150 orchids in
mid-September. In spite of the very dry
conditions throughout the summer and
strong winds from Ian, the orchids
came through with an above average
survival rate.
Our dedicated volunteers have been
doing an amazing job.
If you would like to volunteer to help install
the orchids to the trees or join the watering
team please contact us. We need your help
for this project’s success.
Can we count you in?
