Vice Mayor continued
Redistricting
Florida Atlantic University provided an overview of their
analysis of Fort Lauderdale’s Commission districts using the
2020 U.S Census data as well as considering future growth
trends for 2023. During these workshops many neighborhoods
came out to express their point of views on the topic and
all were considered when the City Commission made its
decision. As Fort Lauderdale redistricts every 10 years, change
was inevitable as the City Commission had to consider the
populations shifts so each district can represent a fairly equal
number of citizens. The main goal of the City Commission was
to avoid dividing neighborhoods between City Commission
districts and to also limit significant geographic changes to
each district. The least impactful decision was made where the
City Commission passed an ordinance adopting Alternative
map 6 with a revision to the boundary between Districts 1
and 2. District 4 being the district that grew the most over the
last 10 years had no option but to shrink in size and share
population with another district.
Bahia Mar
Hundreds of neighbors shared their opinions for and against
the Bahia Mar site and the City Commission listened to
the representatives from Colliers International presenting
their financial analysis of the proposed new lease and the
projections provided by Bahia Mar. The City Commission
discussed this lease considering the use of the public space
and access for the annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat
show. Despite the significant concerns of the public to deny the
lease, the Commission voted 4-1 approving the master lease
between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Bahia Mar. I was the
one vote against the significant extension of the lease of our
public land because for me, public purpose does not include
hundreds of multimillion-dollar condos.
The City of Fort Lauderdale and District IV are always on the
look for new ways we can improve our City and are constantly
seeking the opinions of our neighbors, businesses and residents
on how we can make those improvements. We encourage you
to stay engaged and get involved because your opinion matters
and together we can make the City of Fort Lauderdale more
beautiful, more livable and safer for our families.
