LHIA President’s Message continued
The biggest problem the City faces with recycling
is ‘wish-cycling’ and intentional contamination
(no room in the black cart, so it’s chucked into
the blue one!) The best policy to adhere to
regarding recycling is, WHEN IN DOUBT,
THROW IT OUT! (into the garbage!) Do NOT
put it into the blue cart. Because the Chinese are
trying to manage their own waste more
efficiently, it IS true that they are rejecting any
load of material for recycling with
contamination greater than .5% (one-half of one
percent.) Not only are they our dirty materials,
they are shipping them back to the originator.
New markets in the third world are opening up
for recycling and the U.S. is working to develop
internal markets. Regardless, contamination will
still be a ‘No No.” Let’s hope we can continue
to keep this in mind and do our part to make
our planet a cleaner, safer and more
sustainable place to live.
Thank you, Pam, for clarifying the facts about
recycling in Fort Lauderdale!
And to our neighborhood volunteers…
Thank you for volunteering!
Lauderdale Harbors neighbors China
Niemann and her adult daughter, Aja
Niemann, who recently moved to Lauderdale
and who used to raise Monarch Butterflies, for
working at the Snyder Park Butterfly
Grooming event in early May. I would also
like to acknowledge Ed Rebholz (LHIA Vice
President) for working at the city tree
giveaway. Both events earned points on
behalf of Lauderdale Harbors which
translates to dollars for our neighborhood. RV
