Commissioner’s Message
n an effort to keep residents safe, your local government has opened up a
hotline (311 or 954-831-4000) for residents to report establishments not
I adhering to current law. Broward County has also created a dashboard to
report establishments out of compliance. If you experience a restaurant, business, or
long-term rental/AirBnB that is not adhering to the guidelines, please don’t hesitate
to let us know.
One thing has become clear - life continues despite a pandemic.
We are now in the middle of hurricane season, and this year presents new
challenges because of COVID-19. We’re taking appropriate measures, including
the coordination of safe emergency sheltering options suitable in an infectious
disease environment.
While we may be experiencing “disaster fatigue,” preparation is the most
important step we can take to protect ourselves and our families. I ask that each
family carefully review their emergency plan and check their hurricane supply kit to
make sure they are ready for any storms ahead. You can read more about this at
fortlauderdale.gov/hurricane.
Heather Moraitis
District I Commissioner Another action item I must ask every resident to do is complete the 2020 Census.
City of Fort Lauderdale Our D1 neighborhoods have not participated as fully as they did 10 years ago.
hmoraitis@fortlauderdale.gov We need to up our participation rate because the data from the Census is used to
help allocate and distribute resources and public services properly, as well as to
Office of the Mayor properly decide the right representation for voting in all sorts of districting efforts
and City Commission and elections. You can help us better serve you by participating in the Census and
City Hall encouraging your family, friends, and neighbors to do the same!
100 N. Andrews Ave.
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301 Lastly, we are going through the budget hearings process. The city commission will
meet at 5:01PM on September 3rd and 14th. Neighbors will have the opportunity to
give input on the city’s operation and expenditures. If the commission is still meeting
virtually, you can watch online at YouTube or at fortlauderdale.gov/fltv -- otherwise,
Melissa Coningsby
District 1 Commission Assistant please come to City Hall to participate in person. I’m happy to say that even though
mconingsby@fortlauderdale.gov we experienced financial shortfalls due to COVID-19, we were able to avoid raising
954-828-5033 taxes. You can go to FortLauderdale.gov/budget to see the full budget.
As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or my staff if we can serve you.
Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you again soon! n
Heather Moraitis
