President's Message
Lake Estates Improvement Association, Inc.
Friends,
encourage you to get involved with the Improvement Association of Lake Estates,
Inc. In a leadership position, you have a voice and can help neighbors get results
Ifor chronic problems. Our successes together have been a group effort. Annual
dues are $25-please join!
In 1980, Dennis and I bought one of the last vacant lots in Lake Estates and started
with building a new seawall. We learned that when they dug the canals in northeast
Fort Lauderdale, they threw the muck on the lots requiring new homes to either build
on pilings or demuck the lot and build on new compressed soil. We designed our
new house and started our family.
In 1982, we joined the Improvement Association of Lake Estates, Inc. I was the editor of
the monthly newsletter and the salient issue was Executive Airport traffic noise. All politics
are local. I got involved in the Association because the planes were flying so low and
loudly that they were waking up our new baby, Kristin. George Koch, our Vice President
led the effort and successfully got the traffic controllers to route most of the airplane traffic
to turn up the I95 corridor until they got to a higher altitude and the noise was dissipated.
Linda W. Bird, President Over the years, we organized protests against any runway expansion at the Executive
Lakes Estates Airport. In addition, after a series of crashes from planes departing or arriving at the
Improvement Association, Inc. Executive Airport, we organized a successful meeting with the FAA and more than 300
neighbors attended. You could hear a pin drop when a Bay Colony neighbor played a
recording demonstrating the excessive noise from the older planes flying over our homes.
In 1993, Dennis and I bought our current house in Lake Estates which needed a complete renovation. Because it was located
on a point lot, we felt secure that the renovation would be financially supported with appreciation over the years. We stripped
the house to the studs, replaced the roof, plumbing, and electrical panel and wiring and added square footage with an
oversized garage and a large entertaining lanai.
Within the nineties, I became President of the Association and participated in the City's change in the B2 zoning to B1
zoning as commercial properties changed ownership on NE 27th Avenue. This allowed us to participate in Development
Review Committee recommendations for neighborhood compatibility which we required a wall be built with each new
build to buffer the noise, light spillage, and truck loading and unloading.
Immediately following the wall, we went door to door to get $110,000 from the city as a line item on the Parks Bond
Program to beautify our entrances and NE 27th Avenue with pavers and lush landscaping.
Together, we defeated the canal tax and the Wave Street Car. We lobbied and received all new underground water pipes,
new paving for our neighborhood streets, and new landscaping on NE 27th Avenue from the Ferrari renovation. Unfortunately,
we were not able to stop the three story Ferrari renovation when our Association had endorsed only a two story renovation.
Successes are built together. We have a strong legacy. Please join us! n
