The ”Biarritz“ Hole
The 18th Hole at the
Coral Ridge Golf Course

n the final restoration plans for the course, Rees
Jones had something special in mind for golfers,
I“the 18th is a strong finishing hole, and a great
golf course needs a great finishing hole,” Hence,
#18 was designed as a “Biarritz” hole.
A Biarritz, or Biarritz green, is a putting green that
features a deep gully, or swale, bisecting its middle.
The gully, which is manicured the same as the rest of
the green, usually runs from side-to-side. This creates
a front portion and a back portion as well as a
center portion in the swale.
Rees Jones explains, “Every green surface at Coral
Ridge is distinctly different in shape, angle and
contour. The 18th hole is one of the longest par
fours on the course, so the entrance is open, but the
green surrounds have their pitfalls with the water on
the left, bunkers left and right, as well as a closely
mowed chipping area. The Biarritz green surface
requires skill and accuracy on the approach shot to
achieve a golfer’s final goal. This deep green
