President’s Message continued
A mature tree can resemble an umbrella, with a wider canopy than it is tall.
The delicate, fern-like leaflets provide light shade and the perfect backdrop
for the flowers to shine against. The bark is smooth and gray. Royal poinciana
is deciduous, providing your landscape with cooling shade during the hottest
parts of the year and warming sunshine in the winter. While it’s not sturdy in
storms, judicious pruning can help prevent breakage, and the tree will often
recover quickly after losing limbs.
MEMBERSHIP
It will soon be time to renew your security patrol membership. If you are
already a member, we hope you’ll renew. If you’re not a member, we hope
you’ll join us. Preliminary data from July 2022 (when the patrols began) to
January 2023 shows a 38.33% DECREASE in Type 1 crimes over the same
period the previous year. Type 1 crimes include theft, burglary, assault, rape
and homicide. All police departments are required to report this data. The
FLPD provides this information by neighborhood. We will continue to update
this information over time, but the initial analysis as to the effectiveness of the
security patrol program is very encouraging.
We will now be requiring Association membership to be a Security Patrol
Program member. There will be no increase in the cost of the Security Patrol
program for 2023-2024; it will remain at $450, however the $100 Association
fee will be added to the Security Patrol invoice. If you have already paid the
Association fee of $100, your cost will only be $450. The $100 we collect for
the Association is the reason we have been able to contribute or entirely fund
the many neighborhood improvements we have seen over the past few years,
such as the entry monuments and the speed cushions. We would like to install
license plate readers and ornamental street signs in the future, but we will need Timothy L. Hernandez, AICP, is an urban planner,
