RVCA President’s Message

his past April, Fort Lauderdale, and particularly several neighborhoods in District
4, were severely impacted by an unprecedented flooding event. As president of
Ta neighborhood association, you become a part of what is happening citywide,
but you are very closely involved with what happens and affects the neighborhoods
in your own district. You meet with the other presidents and you hear their stories and
feel their pain. Mostly, you try to help.
Rio Vista fared remarkably well compared to neighborhoods just a short distance
west of us. By now, you have all seen the videos of the rescues and cars that littered
the roadways. It really was a horrific disaster to many areas of our city.
As of 4/17, there were 2 shelters in operation housing over 150 residents whose
Lori Sterling homes were uninhabitable. When I put out a call for donations, Rio Vista residents
stepped up. Thank you all for helping!

I can’t say enough about the job Commissioner Sturman has done to help his district
residents navigate this disaster. He and his staff had a line of communication open
24/7. He has been relentless in pursuit of fulfilling the basic needs of people who
had lost everything. No stone was left unturned for opportunities to secure resources
for those in need throughout the different phases of this unprecedented disaster.
To put it mildly, the last half of April was head spinning. Just two weeks after the
flooding, RVCA hosted a coyote presentation by Florida Fish and Wildlife to address
the recent coyote sightings in the area.
