                                                                             he City of Fort Lauderdale is implementing an
                                                                             updated “Seawall Elevation Requirement” that

                                                                         seawall from 4.0 NGVD to 5.0 NGVD. There are
                                                                         trigger points when an owner is required to commence
                                                                         the mandated improvements. There is a one (1) year
                                                                         time period, which is consistent with language in the
                                                                         County model ordinance, once a specific trigger-point
                                                                         is reached, that is intended to convey a sense of
                                                                         urgency for a homeowner to take action.
                                                                         Owners should review this ordinance, so that they
                                                                         allow adequate time to allow time to navigate
                                                                         through the bidding process, the local, state and
                                                                         federal permitting process and in securing a qualified
                                                                         marine contractor. The ordinance does provide some
                                                                         leeway, based on the specific designated base flood
                                                                         elevation of structures, to ensure that the finished
                                                                         floor is higher than the top elevation of the seawall.
                                                                          It is recognized that the new elevation may require
                                                                         some additional work to harmonize with the adjacent
                                                                         upland property, and that additional engineered
                                                                         features may be necessary to provide for the
                                                                         necessary drainage. Further, the city recognizes that
                                                                         higher seawalls are only one part of an overall
                                                                         strategy to address impacts from Sea Level Rise, and
                                                                         tidal valves in stormwater infrastructure are also
                                                                         required. To date the city has installed and maintains
                                                                         approximately 200 tidal valves and will continue to
                                                                         install them in low elevation stormwater infrastructure
                                                                         to further reduce impacts of tidal induced flooding.”
